How infrared sauna and red light therapy can support cognitive health

Longevity, Mental Health

Cognitive decline isn’t inevitable—and you have more influence than you think. Backed by emerging science, Sunlighten’s infrared sauna and red light therapy are powerful tools to support brain health, sharpen clarity, and protect what matters most.

Cognitive health isn’t only about memory. It’s your brain’s ability to think, learn, and reason clearly. While aging is natural, cognitive decline is not something you have to passively accept. Infrared sauna and red light therapy can be powerful allies as you protect your brain health and sharpen your mental clarity.

The myth of the aging brain

Your brain is metabolically demanding. It needs steady blood flow, oxygen, nutrients, healthy mitochondrial function, and low levels of chronic inflammation to perform at its best. When those systems are strained by stress, poor sleep, sedentary routines, or age-related vascular changes, the brain isn't able to operate at its full potential.

If you’re noticing brain fog, mental fatigue, trouble focusing, or you have a family history of Alzheimer’s or dementia, it’s understandable to want proactive ways to support your brain now. The encouraging news is that your brain is highly responsive to the daily environment you create for it. Neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections has been found to continue throughout life, even in an aging brain.

There’s emerging research that light-based wellness tools such as infrared sauna and red light therapy may support cognitive health. They boost circulation and blood flow, aid a healthy inflammation response, and enhance cellular energy. These systemic effects create a full-body, healthier environment for the brain to function efficiently.

Red light therapy benefits for the brain

Red light therapy commonly includes red light and near-infrared (NIR) light. It is typically referred to as photobiomodulation, a process where specific wavelengths of light interact with cells and influence mitochondrial activity. Red and NIR can penetrate through the skull and affect the brain directly. These wavelengths are absorbed by mitochondria — the energy producers inside your cells — helping them make more ATP (cellular energy). In brain tissue, this can mean a reduction in neuroinflammation and enhanced cognitive resilience.

Dr. Michael Hamblin, a leading authority in the field of photobiomodulation, explains how red light and NIR work in tandem:

“I believe that both are important. The local effect on the mitochondria in the brain and the blood flow and the oxygenation, the ATP — all the things that people measure — undoubtedly there is a systemic component. The inflammatory milieu will change when the light goes into the blood.

Under normal circumstances, the brain cannot easily repair itself as other organs can do. However, light can trigger repair processes within the brain by promoting the formation of new brain cells and new connections between existing brain cells.”

Photobiomodulation offers hope as a preventive therapy. Early studies show it may have a positive effect on cognitive function, working memory, and executive function (the ability to focus, plan, remember instructions, multitask, and control impulses). Transcranial photobiomodulation — targeted red and NIR light applied near the head — also shows potential for supporting brain energy metabolism.

In simpler terms: light may help the brain do what it is already designed to do — generate energy, regulate inflammation, maintain healthy blood flow, and support communication between cells. But brain support does not only happen through targeted light near the head. A whole-body approach matters, too — because your brain depends on your cardiovascular system, inflammatory state, sleep quality, and stress response.

Brain benefits of infrared sauna therapy

Your brain is not separate from the rest of your body. It is deeply connected to your blood vessels, immune system, metabolism, hormones, and nervous system. When whole-body circulation improves and your nervous system shifts into a calmer state, your brain benefits from that environment.

Infrared sauna works through a different, but complementary, pathway than red light therapy. It induces systemic effects — increased heart rate, vasodilation, sweating, circulation, and deep relaxation — that may indirectly support the brain.

Far- and mid-infrared are particularly effective at gently raising core body temperature, which expands blood vessels and increases heart rate, mimicking the effect of moderate cardiovascular exercise. Repeated sauna use improves endothelial function and overall vascular flexibility, helping deliver oxygen-rich blood throughout the body and brain — supporting cerebral blood flow and brain tissue integrity.

Whole-body heat is good for the brain

Long-term observational research has linked frequent sauna use with lower risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. In the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease study, which followed 2,315 middle-aged Finnish men for a median of 20.7 years, men who used a sauna 4–7 times per week had a lower observed risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease compared with those who used a sauna once per week. Another area of interest is BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor — a protein involved in neuroplasticity, learning, memory, and neuronal adaptation. A 2021 study found that whole-body passive heating acutely elevated circulating BDNF concentration, while local heating did not produce the same effect.

These results are why whole-body heat therapy is so compelling for cognitive wellness: it may help support brain health not through one isolated pathway, but through a network of systems that matter for healthy aging — circulation, cellular energy, stress recovery, sleep, and inflammatory balance.

Does light therapy need to hit specific body parts to be effective?

Not always. When it comes to cognitive support, light and heat can work in both targeted and systemic ways.

Targeted light therapy is like shining a focused beam where support is needed. Devices placed near the head may directly stimulate cells and mitochondria there.

Systemic light and heat therapy, like infrared saunas, support the entire body. It may improve circulation, promote relaxation, support inflammatory balance, and help benefits reach the brain indirectly, but meaningfully.

This is again where Sunlighten’s infrared technology comes to the forefront. Red light, near-infrared, mid-infrared, and far-infrared each interact with the body differently. In the mPulse® Intelligent Sauna, the PulseIQ™ infrared intelligence platform separates these four key wavelengths. This is beyond the blended full spectrum found in standard saunas. It provides targeted energy your body can absorb for more intentional benefits.

How each wavelength supports cognitive wellness

Your brain may be the focus, but the pathway starts with your whole body. Sunlighten’s patented SoloCarbon® heating technology is tested to deliver up to 99% emissivity. You receive near-perfect levels of infrared, delivered at the highest quality and quantity your body can absorb. Each wavelength offers unique benefits to support your body and your brain.

  • Red light: Supports surface-level cellular activity and skin health. In a cognitive wellness routine, red light may be especially useful as part of a broader photobiomodulation practice focused on energy, recovery, and healthy aging.
  • Near-infrared: Energizes cells, enhances circulation, penetrates tissues — supports mitochondria and neurovascular health.
  • Mid-infrared: Supports circulation, muscle recovery, and vascular flexibility. Better circulation means more efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body — including systems that support the brain.
  • Far-infrared: Gently raises core body temperature, supports sweating, and helps create the cardiovascular-like response many people associate with a deep infrared sauna session. This may support relaxation, detoxification pathways, and nervous system recovery.

Together, these wavelengths help support the conditions your brain needs most: energy, oxygenation, recovery, and resilience.

Signs your brain may needs more recovery support

Some cognitive changes can be subtle. You may not think of them as “brain health” signals at first, but they often reflect the same underlying needs: more energy, more blood flow, less stress, better sleep, and deeper recovery.

You may benefit from a regular infrared sauna or red light therapy routine if you notice:

  • Brain fog, especially in the afternoon
  • Trouble focusing or making decisions
  • Forgetting things you usually remember
  • Feeling overstimulated or easily overwhelmed
  • Low mood or emotional flatness
  • Poor sleep or waking up unrefreshed
  • Mental fatigue even after resting

These may be signs that your brain and nervous system need more energy, circulation, and downtime. And these are the same conditions that light therapy is uniquely suited to address.

How to use your infrared sauna for cognitive support

Don’t wait until you feel foggy or depleted to care for your brain. The most powerful longevity habits are often the ones you repeat consistently — before symptoms become louder.

Longevity starts with daily rituals

You don’t have to wait for symptoms to start protecting your brain. Daily rituals like infrared sauna sessions, deep rest, mindfulness, and movement are powerful longevity tools — and light is a cornerstone.

Whether you’re winding down in the evening or jump-starting your day, a 20–40-minute session in a Sunlighten infrared sauna can:

  • Calm your nervous system
  • Ease stress and support relaxation
  • Promote healthy circulation
  • Encourage sweating and detoxification pathways
  • Support cellular energy production
  • Transition into deeper sleep
  • Create space for mental clarity

It’s not just about living longer. It’s about living better — with a brain that feels sharp, calm, and fully you.
